A domain name can be compared with
an entry in the telephone book, however, there is one major difference.
There can only be one John Smith. If the Domain Name that
you require has already been taken, you have lost this opportunity.
Preparation for a Web presence starts with your Domain Name. Therefore
you should reserve your Domain Name as soon as possible. Domain
Names must have between 3 and 63 characters (ACE-String . ASCII
Compatible Encoding). They cannot either start or end with a minus
sign (-).

In Germany, numerous words and surnames are
written with umlauts (i.e. Müller). As of March 2004
they no longer have to make do with transcribing their surnames
as mueller.de. The introduction of the new IDN (Internationalized
Domain Name) standard allows a total of 92 additional characters,
including umlauts. Only the "ß" is denied the German-speaking
Internet users. According to international rules, this is equivalent
to its transcription as "ss". It would not be possible
to distinguish between the domains straße.de and strasse.de.
All the characters newly introduced
with the IDNs are available for registration by NetzConsult. For
all their understandable enthusiasm over the new possibilities
opened up for domains, applicants should not forget that IDNs are
subject to the same rules as all other .de domains - applicants
alone bear full liability for ensuring that their domains do not
violate the rights of others. Although many browsers have already
been enabled for IDNs, it is quite likely that not all will support
them until some time after their launch. You should therefore not
be surprised if you encounter some browser problems during this
initial period.
